Performance testing
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
The test
Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is the gold standard in sports medicine: a maximal exercise test on the test bike. The load is increased in equal stages while your heartbeat is recorded by ECG and medically monitored. We also measure your respiratory gases (O₂ and CO₂, VO₂max), your lactate level to assess your metabolism, and your blood pressure.

Frequently asked questions
Preparation
How do I prepare the day before?
With a short workout: about 45 minutes at an easy pace with 3 × 2 minutes more intense (each with 3 easy minutes in between). That way your legs are ready for the maximal test the next day.
Do I have to come on an empty stomach?
No – please don’t come on an empty stomach! Eating and drinking enough is important for a meaningful test.
What can I eat and drink shortly before the test?
No sugary drinks or food shortly before the test – they distort the lactate values. A normal meal 2–3 hours beforehand is no problem.
Equipment
What do I need to bring?
- Cycling clothes incl. cycling shoes (or trainers)
- Towel
- Water bottle – enough to drink during the test
- Shower things
Showers are available on site.

Technical questions
Can I bring my own bike?
No – the test bike is permanently installed. We adjust the seat position to you before the test so that you feel comfortable and achieve realistic values.
Does my clipless pedal system fit?
Yes, we have all common pedal systems on site. Just bring your own cycling shoes.
Medicine & tests
Which test protocol is used?
A step test up to maximum load:
- Men: start at 70 watts, plus 30 watts every 120 seconds
- Women: start at 50 watts, plus 25 watts every 90 seconds
We record exercise ECG, lactate, respiratory gases and blood pressure.
Will I get a training recommendation?
Yes – an individually calculated 16-week training recommendation with specific heart rate and power zones for the different training zones.
Why a step test and not an FTP test?
An FTP test estimates your threshold power from 20 minutes of maximum effort – lactate, respiratory gases and other values are not recorded. In the step test, we measure lactate, heart rate, respiratory gases and power throughout the entire test and analyse them afterwards: genuine sports medicine diagnostics.

How much does the testing cost?
